Ljubljana City Center

LJUBLJANA is the capital and largest city of Slovenia.  This is where Eastern Europe meets Western, and Northern Europe meets Southern.  It is documented from the 12th century and was part of the Habsburg Empire by 1335, where it would remain until 1797.  It was briefly a Napoleonic city before returning to Austria, all of which crumbled down in WWI.  After that it joined the Yugoslavian confederation until independence in 1991.  But that’s politics, not culture(s).  Located at the transit point between Romance, Germanic and Slavic cultures, it has always been something of a crossroads.   There have always been multiple languages, German and Italian in addition to the Slavic.
