Radio Free Tucson: KXCI 91.3 FM, “no static at all”…

img_1297In this day on Internet everything, radio broadcasts may seem a bit old-fashioned, but Justin Kesha don’t know it yet, then know it now: community radio is the hottest ticket in town for modern indie vibes and world tribes. Kanye see Beyoncé force-fed smoke-and-mirror music that dominates the Big Biz of Entertainment, Inc? Try…

Where else will you hear live music on the radio? We all know the answer to that question. So I need to give a ‘shout-out’ to KXCI-Tucson for making life livable there, in what sometimes seems like a redneck cow-town with too many cowboys and not enough hippies. But that could change…

I started listening to KXCI over two years ago, while preparing to open my hostel. Well, that project folded after too many head-butts with the local Politburo downtown, and the project almost turned nightmarish when the gentry-minded West U ‘hood got mean and nasty trying to block sale of my house to a buyer proposing to offer services to the homeless, i.e. food…

But all’s well that ends well, right? So on my most recent trip to tie up loose ends, I stopped by my the radio station to collect on the free gift for which I had a coupon since donating to them, a long time now. So not only did I get this non-lousy T-shirt, but I also got a tour of the facility! Now that’s service! And everybody was so nice!

I may even re-visit my previous assessment of Tucson as the Portland of the Southwest. For KXCI may not be KEXP-Seattle, their acknowledged big brother, or ever KCRW in LA, but they definitely remind me of KBOO, and that ain’t bad. In fact I may even revisit Tucson as a place to retire, since I have a 10×20 storage unit full of stuff already…
