Sierra Leone: You’ll Never Be Alone…

Sierra Leone is something similar to the UK as Liberia is to the US, the place where they resettled the slaves that they had just liberated from the high seas and holding pens of West Africa, this after slavery had been abolished in the UK…

By this time liberated Loyalist American ex-slaves were already established in Freetown, the purpose-built capital, and emulating America, along with other displaced London and Canadian displaced blacks, and Jamaican ‘maroons’…

But those Krio (creoles) are a tiny, if influential, minority population behind the majority Temne and Mende tribal groups, plus trading Fulani and Mandingo originally from neighboring countries, and other groups including the Kissi, pronounced something like Geechee, their Gullah-denominated relatives on the far Carolina coasts of America, and the last remaining semi-traditional Africans there…

Those distant connections are hard to find these days, what with no written records, but it can still be done, as long as anyone cares enough to do it. Today there are more than seven million people in the country, a million of them in the capital Freetown. This is one of the countries I’ve yet to visit, BUT: it’s on the list…
