E-stonia: lotta’ hard work, still not Finnish…

With origins on the far northern Uralic steppes, first cousins with the Finns and Sami, and distant relations with Ugric Hungarians, these groups of Finno-Ugric speakers are the exception to the rest of the Indo-European-speaking European continent…

Estonia’s capital city Tallinn first appears in the history books as German-dominated Reval of the Hanseatic League only to later be dominated by the Russians, who still form 25 % of the population, as they do elsewhere in the old rotting carcass of the old Soviet Union, where life was hard and the jobs were many, but low-paying…

But only Estonia and its Baltic neighbors Latvia and Lithuania broke free with a ‘singing revolution’ that involved the three nations joining hands across many miles and many borders, forming a long line to make a very specific point…

…and now they’re a leader in the virtual worlds of e-residency and e-voting, everything but e-parties, party parties, that is, not yet, anyway, another specialty of E-stonia, last I checked anyway, 2009 or so, my gap year 55 springtime for Communism, 100 countries in 2 years or bust, Tallinn the party capital of Europe…

…friendly natives taking tours of my hostel, but not so e-friendly when drunken backpackers fall asleep on common couches, unplugging routers to charge cell-phones or leaving half-finished glasses of whatnot scattered all over cluttered kitchens, just don’t forget to take out the trash once in a while, sold Russian…
