Ethiopia: Where it all began…

Ethiopia is one of the most incredible countries in the world, close to the origin of the human race, in Africa, of Africa, but not limited to it, or by it, highly recommended if you’ve been elsewhere in Africa and figure it’s all the same–it’s not…

Ethiopia has ancient connections to Egypt, and the Mediterranean Sea, for this is the source of the Nile River, which begins here, and ends there, and then there’s the Red Sea and the Indian ocean, all of which lie nearby in the greater Horn of Africa…

Ethiopia is one of the first Christian nations, though now surrounded by Islam, and a third of its population also, part and parcel, the rest mostly Orthodox (ex-Coptic) but also Protestant, all of ancient feel, like traveling through the Bible…

The languages are Semitic, and so is much of the DNA, so more Mideast than Africa, more Mediterranean than Saharan, not as much Bantu as Nilotic. And the music is hip-notic, soul-shaking and shoulder-shimmering like nothing you’ve ever seen before…

This last video should really be titled something like “Ethiopia, Islam, Harare and Rimbaud,” since those are the themes mostly represented, so definitely worth a watch if you’re a fan of the great 19th century French poet, who spent much of his life here…
